ATI Magazine Interviews Interviews

Maz Listhrop // Don’t Let the fear of looking stupid ever hold you back.

Q1: How did you get started with your music/YouTube? And if you weren’t a YouTuber/musician what would you want to be doing?

A1: I Started youtube when I was in college, me and my friends were just bored and we use to make joke videos. We uploaded them and then one day I made an ‘Ask Maz’ video,  I had around 1000 twitter followers and I got them to ask me some questions and from there it kind of just took off.

Q2: What or who keeps you motivated and inspires you?

A2: The people that watch my video’s motivate me, if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be motivated and I wouldn’t be making as good quality content. The viewers that watch my stuff are the reason I get to do what I get to do and why I make what I make.

What inspires me, that’s a big question. I get inspired by all the YouTubers that I know inspire me, but I mainly get inspired by public figures.

Q3: What is the most memorable experience of your life/career so far? And what have you learned from it?

A3: My most memorable experience of my career so far is probably, a tour I did in New York earlier this year.

I learned that a lot of people that watch my video’s get really excited when they met me. I have learned from the tour, to be patient and to let people have their moment. Imagine you have watched someone on the internet for a long time, it’s the same thing, you have to be patient with the viewer’s cos they are the reason we are where we are.

Q4: Would you go back and change anything in your journey so far? (If no, why)

A4: I don’t think I would change anything, a lot of things that have happened has happened because of something else. So I can’t exactly go back and change everything.

Q5: In the next two years what do you ASPIRE to have done?

A5: I want to do more touring stuff, meeting everyone, everyone’s happy on tour, especially me. Sometimes I like routine, like in school when the bell rings and you have do something. My day isn’t scheduled, when you’re on tour it is and you have to be in place at a certain time, etc I like doing that.

Q6: If you could collaborate with anyone who would to it be and why?

A6: If I could collab with anyone it would be someone that wouldn’t want to colourable with me. A music artist I would color with be Linking Park. I’ve just put together a Band and we are currently putting together some music, I’m trying to be different.

Q7: What is your motto in life/what do you live by?

A7: “Don’t Let the fear of looking stupid ever hold you back” With anyone to get good at something, you have to be “bad” people aren’t born good singers, people aren’t born good dancers, you just have to practice. It’s okay to be scared, but don’t let it stop you doing anything you want to do. You can only get better at what you are trying to do and achieve, so don’t let it hold you back. If you want to be Beyonce then go ahead and be Beyonce.

Q8: What is currently on your playlist?

A8: Music playlist is quite versatile, Drake, SlipKnot, Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Tyler The Creator, Earl SweatShirt, Frank Ocean, Odd Future.

Q9: If you could have a song to be the soundtrack to your life what would it be and why?

A9: It would probably be Yellow to Coldplay because I feel like I am a little bit of a hopeless romantic. If you have to choose a theme tune for your life then it has to be a Coldplay song.

Q10: What are your biggest dreams? and what are your biggest fears

A10: My biggest dream is probably to do what Beyonce is doing tonight, we are currently at the 02 Arena and Beyonce is playing tonight. I would love do be able to do that and perform to all those people in that arena. That would be so cool, one day.

My biggest fears other than snakes and dogs, cos I don’t really do them is not being good enough. I hate the idea of not being good enough.

Q11: What is next for you/your plans for the next year?

A11: For the rest of year and the next year, I am going to be releasing new music with my band Myth City. We just released an EP and now we are going to be looking to film some music videos and hopefully do some more shows around the country. That’s the main product I am focusing on at the moment which is kind of scary as this is something I haven’t done before, I mean I have done music, but not like this, to this extent. So it is interesting to see how my viewers take the new music.
