Interviews

Mikyla Cara // Yes I was burnt but I call it a lesson learned.

Exclusive Interview with Mikyla Cara for ATI Magazine.

Q1: If you had the opportunity to get an inspiring message across to a lot of people, what would your message be?

A1: It sounds cliche but always focus on the light at the end of the tunnel and keep striving to reach it. Things sometimes feel impossible but if you work hard enough and never give up you can achieve what you want to and much more.

Q2: How did you get started with your music? And if you weren’t an artist/musician what would you want to be doing?

A2: I have always sung. In year 4 I sang ‘my heart will go on’ in assembly and I remember the buzz I felt from performing in front of people and hearing their compliments afterwards, from that I never really stopped singing. As the years passed I went from singing other peoples songs to writing my own which has proved to be a real outlet for me. If I wasn’t a singer I think I would have been a detective (I know you will be laughing whilst reading this), I honestly love analyzing things and discovering the facts #nerd LOL

Q3: What or who keeps you motivated and inspires you?

A3: Every time I put my all into a music project and see it come to life I feel extremely motivated and continue striving to do the same thing. I am also a single mama and my mini me keeps me very focussed and of course, gives me heaps of inspiration this is reflected in my last single ‘Grown’ which is a song I wrote for her.

Q4: What is the most memorable experience of your life/career so far? And what have you learned from it?

A4: In 2010 I was given the opportunity to sing at The Apollo Theatre in New York which was the most incredible experience I have ever had! What I did learn from this was that although the opportunity was a huge one I most definitely could have got more out it in hindsight.

Q5: Would you go back and change anything in your journey so far? (If no, why)

A5: I would have started earlier, although I have always sung I didn’t push my career properly until 2 years ago, I didn’t even have insta or twitter! (Shock!!) LOL. Despite that, I believe everything happens for a reason and I am now more determined than ever!

Q6: In the next two years what do you ASPIRE to have done?

A6: I hope to have put on more of my own shows (I did my first one in January) I also hope to have a larger dedicated following that allows me to be an artist as a full-time job.

Q7: How much of your life and background have influenced you to become a songwriter/musician?

A7: Pretty much all of it……As I mentioned earlier writing and performing music is an outlet for me and the content of my songs very much reflects this. I often write from personal experience or from other peoples stories that I have witnessed and have felt inspired by. My debut EP Grown was heavily based on personal experience and in fact, conveys my journey of the last couple years.

Q8: What lyrics mean the most to you and why (ones you have written and or ones you didn’t write)

A8: The song ‘Lesson learned’ by Alicia Keys is one of favorite mainly because of the lyrical content…..’Yes I was burnt but I call it a lesson learned’ very simple but resonates with me. Also, my own song ‘Grown’, as I mentioned earlier I wrote this song for my daughter, therefore, the lyrics are very personal and heart felt ‘Apple of my eye, never let you fall far from the tree….I see myself in her, and I see her in me’…..

Q9: If you could collaborate with anyone who would to it be and why?

A9: I would have to say either Alicia Keys as she is my all time favorite and I love every song she has ever written or JoJo she has such an amazing voice!

Q10: What is the most inspiring message you have internalized in life so far?

A10: People may take kindness for a weakness but never change, in the end, those who are true will come into the light and those who aren’t will fade into the darkness, this applies to everything in life.

Q11: What is your motto in life/what do you live by?

A11: Sometimes its just the way the cookie crumbles…..I always say this for some reason but its true sometimes you just have to except that sometimes things just don’t work out and weren’t meant to be but there’s a better plan for you 🙂

Q12: What is currently on your playlist?

A12: Mainly the songs I have to learn to teach at work……this includes songs from Disneys Moana and songs from Shrek the musical LOL….

In addition, I would have to say ‘humble’ Kendrick Lemar, ‘Issues’ Julia Michael’s, ‘Galway Girl’ Ed Sheeran,  ‘Chill out’ Ray Blk and ‘Figures’ Jessie Reyez to name a few 🙂

Q13: If you could have a song to be the soundtrack to your life what would it be and why?

A13: ‘Try again’ Aaliyah…If at first you don’t succeed dust yourself off and try again!

Q14: What are your biggest dreams? and what are your biggest fears

A14: My biggest dream is to live contently, by this, i mean feeling as though I have reached the peak in my career and am able to sustain it. My biggest fear is spiders (maybe not the deep answer you were after) but I hate them! anything with eight legs is just wrong! LOL

Q15: What is next for you/your plans for the next year?

A15: I literally sat down the other day and wrote an annual plan (as you do)….I intend to release 4/5 more singles before the end of the year alongside that will be music videos for each of the songs, I have recorded most of these singles already and have filmed one of the videos. I also plan to have another live performance towards the end of the year maybe during the Christmas holidays. In the next couple of months, I will be performing a couple acoustic sets alongside live band performances, I will also be releasing my fourth single ‘Reptile’ hopefully next month!

Q16: What would your advice to be to those out there who want to live out their dreams?

A16: If you want it enough go and get it! Don’t make excuses and except you may live off a couple hours sleep a night but it will all be worth it in the end!

Q17: Lastly, for those who don’t know where can people follow your career?

A17: On all social media platforms!

InstagramTwitter | FB |Soundcloud

Also, my debut EP Grown is out now on all the major online platforms and I will be releasing my fourth single very soon!
