ATI Magazine Interviews Interviews

Sam Tompkins // The things people say behind your back are none of your business.

Q1: If you had the opportunity to get a inspiring message across to a large amount of people, what would your message be?

A1: My message would be that in order to succeed, you have to learn to be patient. Take care of your mind, not just your physical self. Take breaks when you need to. Sometimes it’s just about completing the race, not finishing first.

Q2: How did you get started with your music? And if you weren’t an artist/musician what would you want to be doing?

A2: Music just kind of happened. It was all chance. I couldn’t afford a hat one time, so my friends gassed me up to go busking and so I did and made the money and then I just kinda pursued it from there. If I wasn’t a musician, I would literally not wanna be anything else, so it’s hard to give an answer to that.

Q3: What or who keeps you motivated and inspires you?

A3: The things that keep me motivated is the idea of being able to make people happy regardless of how many people that is, by just doing what I love to do. The people who motivate me most are my close family, friends and supporters, whether online or in real life. They always hype me up correctly.

Q4: What is the most memorable experience of your life/career so far? And what have you learnt from it?

A4: My most memorable experience of my career so far is releasing my first EP, “COLOURED EMOTIONS”, with no label, or or budget backing, and watching it succeed in its own right. Very proud of that achievement.

Q5: Would you go back and change anything in your journey so far? (If no, why)

A5: Anyone close to me will know if there was anyone in this industry who you would assume would go back and change things, it would be me. Funnily enough though, I wouldn’t change a thing. Every single rubbish time or period in my career has lead me to be here right now and I’m currently the most happy I have ever been whilst on this journey, so can’t complain and won’t complain.

Q6: In the next two years what do you ASPIRE to have done?

A6: In the next two years, I want to have sold out at least 3 headline shows. Each one being in bigger venues than the last. I also want to have started working on an album of some sort maybe.

Q7: How much of your life and background have influenced you to become a songwriter/musician?

A7: In terms of background, the only person who would’ve influenced me is my sister, Jenni. She taught me all about r&b and if it wasn’t for her I probably wouldn’t make music at all.

Q8: What lyrics mean the most to you and why (ones you have written and or ones you didn’t write)

A8: I once wrote a song called “Without A Response”, which definitely means the most. It’s about a friend of mine who lost his life last year. I drew a lot of inspiration from him, so it was a hard song to record but a good one.

Q9: If you could collaborate with anyone who would to it be and why?

A9: I’d love to work with Kanye or Pharrell.

Q10: What is most inspiring message you have internalised in life so far?

A10: I think it is that, “the things people say behind your back are none of your business”.

Q11: What is your motto in life/what do you live by?

A11: The motto I live by is that if you don’t try it, how do you know you don’t like it?

Q12: What is currently on your playlist?

A12: Currently a lot of U.K. stuff. Jorja Smith, Col3trane, Mahalia, Isaiah Dreads, Jamal Woon, Etta Bond, PJ Anthony. I think we have he best scene at the moment for sure.

Q13: If you could have a song to be the soundtrack to your life what would it be and why

A13: Like I Love You, by Justin Timberlake. The lyrics aren’t relevant, but That song already is the soundtrack to my life, so no need to change it.

Q14: What are your biggest dreams? and what are your biggest fears

A14: I wanna sell out stadiums, be one of the biggest artists in the whole world, and enjoy my life.

Q15: What is next for you/your plans for the next year?

A15: Can’t say too much. But definitely got some new music coming your way soon.

Q16: What would your advice to be to those out there who want to live out there dreams?

A16: To people who wanna follow your dreams, be proud and confident in yourself and everything else will fall into place… eventually.

Q17: Lastly, for those who don’t know where can people follow your career?

A17: If you wanna follow me on ANYTHING, follow me on Instagram or twitter or anything @SamTompkinsUK
